DMV DRIVER ELIGIBILITY CERTIFICATES (DEC)
-
DMV Eligibility Certificates (DEC) are issued to the parents/guardians or student through the school student services office by appointment only. (See below for information)
DECs are only valid for 30 days. Students are only eligible to receive a DEC when they have obtained a Driver's Education Completion Certificate and passed 70% of their classes last semester.
IF the DEC has expired, and you are requesting to have the DEC reissued, you will be required to make an appointment with the DMV and email Ms. Hitt the appointment confirmation. Reissued DECs will only be issued on the Tuesday prior to the DMV appointment.
Per NC Legislation, students are required to have passed 70% or 3 out of 4 classes last semester in order for a Driving Eligibility Certificate to be issued.NC Legislation requires a student's permit be revoked if the student is unable to maintain adequate progress towards graduation (passing 70% of all courses as determined by first semester and second semester grades....not quarter grades) or if a student drops out of school.HOW TO GET A DRIVER ELIGIBILITY CERTIFICATE (DEC)
Step 1 - Email Driver's Education Completion Certificate and Proof of DMV appointment
Email a scan or clear photo of the Driver’s Education Completion Certificate issued by the driving school/instructor to Ms. Hitt (ghitt@wcpss.net).
Once the certificate is received, we will schedule an appointment for the parent/guardian or student to come to Sanderson High School to pick up the Driving Eligibility Certificate. Driver Eligibility Certificates (DEC) are issued on Tuesdays from 8:30 AM to 10: 30 AM and 11:00 AM to 2:00 PM, by appointment only.
If the student’s license was revoked due to grades, they will need an appointment with the DMV for the last license level the student had earned (I.E., Teen Driver Level 1, Level 2 or Level 3). DO NOT BOOK an appointment for “Driver license renewal/replacement”.
Step 2 - Make an appointment to pick up the DEC
The student's parent/guardian, or the student, must come to SHS to pick up the Driving Eligibility Certificate.
Bring the following documents to the appointment:
- Completed Driving Education Certificate (if it has not been emailed ahead of time)
- Proof of address if the current address is different than the one listed on the Driving Education Certificate or the address listed in PowerSchool. Address must be verified for the NC Real ID.
