Immediate enrollment for students in transition
Students experiencing homelessness or in transition have the right to enroll in school immediately. You do not need to provide documents that are usually required, such as:
-
Previous school records
-
Medical or immunization records
-
Proof of residency
-
Birth certificate
-
Proof of guardianship
What enrollment means
Enrollment includes attending classes and taking part in all school activities from the first day.
Missing records or immunizations
If you do not have immunization or medical records, the school liaison will help you get them after your child starts school. If school records are missing, the enrolling school will contact the previous school to request them. Your child can start right away while records are gathered.
Stability for children and youth
Enrolling immediately helps children stay connected to learning, friends, and meals. School offers stability and support during difficult times.
Enrolling without a legal guardian
A student in transition may not be living with a parent or legal guardian. Sometimes, youth are staying with other adults or on their own. If your child qualifies under the McKinney-Vento Act, you do not have to show proof of guardianship or custody.
Schools cannot delay or deny enrollment because:
-
You do not have legal guardianship papers.
-
You are unable to get legal guardianship within a certain time.
Unaccompanied youth must be enrolled right away. If you are concerned about child safety, schools will enroll the student immediately and contact security or law enforcement if needed.
