  • Durham Firefighter Cadet Program

    • Must be 17 – 24 years old by the first day of the program
    • Must have completed 11th grade
    • Students currently enrolled in high school must have and/or maintain a minimum 2.0 GPA and must submit the two most recent report cards or progress reports.
    • Students NOT enrolled in high school must have a high school diploma or equivalent.
    • Must submit two written letters of recommendations from NON-familial teachers or community leaders such as coaches, mentors, work supervisors, religious leaders, etc.
    • Must not have criminal convictions or serious/frequent traffic violations
    • Must provide written parental or legal guardian approval (if younger than 18)
    • Must submit a typed letter stating why you would like to participate in the program.
    • Must provide a COPY of birth certificate, driver's license, and social security card or green card (I-9 documents)

    Caterpillar STEM Summer Program

    Caterpillar Inc. has a program for rising juniors and seniors interested in continuing their education in an engineering field. See the flyer HERE. We will hire three students next summer. (Two in Clayton, and one in Sanford).

    The STEM Student Trainee Program will allow the students to work alongside professional engineers learning the engineering process. Responsibilities vary from job to job but may include designing in Creo, analysis and testing, and/or getting the voice of the customer. Below are the basic and desired qualifications.     Basic Qualifications 

    • Must be 16 years of age by the start of the program
    • You need to be a full-time high school (or home school) student when you apply.
    • You need a minimum 3.0 GPA on a 4.0 scale at your current school (no rounding).
    • Must have access to reliable transportation to get to and from work.

    Top Candidates will also have: 

    • Led a project or team
    • Participated in FIRST programs
    • Completed a technical internship or research project
    • Strong communication and people skills

    STEMblazers Program
    A STEM program for high school girls hosted by Campbell University! STEMblazers is a program dedicated to inspiring girls into STEM careers. We provide programming and opportunities for students to meet women in STEM, ask questions, and work through a real hands-on activity related to the speaker's job. We have partnered with the amazing women at Campbell University to kick off a new chapter on their campus.

    Young Nonprofit Fellowship Program
    General Services Foundation, a Triangle-based nonprofit, teaches students how to find their place in the service community through coaching, seed funding for initiatives, providing resources/networks, and a team, among other things. We hope to foster a life-long passion in service for high schoolers to have a community-oriented mindset, educate themselves on nonprofit topics, and access career/professional development in and out of the nonprofit sector.
    All current 9th-11th graders are eligible.
     Below are the different components of the fellowship program:

    • Internship: Be matched/paired with a host nonprofit you will intern with. You will be working with them on a day-to-day basis.
    • Impact Initiative: You will host many small projects, and a larger Impact Initiative, to benefit your host nonprofit. This can range from events, campaigns, and fundraisers that GSF will help you organize.
    • Article: Each fellow will complete an article to showcase their successes and where they’ve grown.
    • Weekly Assignments & Book: To support personal and professional development, we have a curriculum with weekly assignments to help market yourself to employers/colleges, learn more about the nonprofit sector, and create healthy habits.
    • Participation: Key piece to all five previous categories. Following our leadership principles and having a high level of involvement is expected of fellows.

    North Carolina Criminal Justice Fellows Program 
    100 new fellowships each year to selected students and offer a 100% forgivable educational loan for them to attend a North Carolina Community College, obtain their associate degree, and pursue a career in criminal justice. High school seniors/graduates are eligible to apply for a fellowship. Once awarded, recipients of the forgivable loan are required to graduate with their associate degree in two (2) years and, upon graduation, become certified and employed full-time in an eligible criminal justice profession in an eligible North Carolina County for a period of four (4) years.     Durham Bulls/WRAL Post 50

    The Durham Bulls Explorer Post 50 is a co-ed, unpaid internship program for students ages 14–20 who have completed the eighth grade. Now in its 28th season, the program produces live broadcasts of Durham Bulls home games on WRAL platforms, streams on MiLB.com, and contributes highlights for WRAL and FOX 50 newscasts. This program allows students to explore their interest in broadcast communications while building real-world skills through hands-on experience in a professional sports media setting.

    Police Department seeks applicants for the Junior Cadet Program
    The Wake Forest Police Department (WFPD) is seeking young men and women interested in joining the new Police Junior Cadet Program. The initiative, which replaced the Police Explorer Program, is dedicated to preparing young adults for careers and leadership in public safety. To qualify as a Police Junior Cadet, a person must have completed eighth grade, be between the ages of 14-20, and have an interest in the field of law enforcement. Junior Cadets participate in meetings, training sessions, ride-alongs with experienced police officers (cadets 18 and older), and other activities as part of the learning process. Training consists of basic first aid, department radio procedures, handcuffing, accident investigation, fingerprinting, crime scene analysis, rank structure, leadership, and more.  Members receive a standard uniform that must be worn to all meetings and special events.

    Lady Cardinal Mentorship Program
    The Lady Cardinal Mentorship Program is a 5-week summer enrichment opportunity for rising high school junior and senior girls in North Carolina who are interested in exploring careers in science, technology, engineering and/ or mathematics within the state government. 

    Bio-Agriculture & Technology STEM Bootcamp
    HSCF is excited to accept new applicants for our final year of the Bio-Science STEM program in partnership with Smithfield Foods, Inc. This program provides a comprehensive view across multiple industries led by engineers, technologists, and top international executive business leaders with diverse experience. Exposure to these leaders plays a pivotal role in student achievement, self-efficacy, and confidence in STEM. See details HERE

    Civil Air Patrol (CAP) 

    Founded in 1941 and established as the official civilian auxiliary of the U.S. Air Force seven years later, Civil Air Patrol is chartered by Congress as a nonprofit organization for the purposes of youth development, aerospace education, and to promote general aviation. In an auxiliary role as a Total Force partner of the Air Force, CAP operates the world’s largest fleet of single-engine aircraft for search and rescue, disaster relief, training, and education. Civil Air Patrol is dedicated to serving America’s communities, saving lives, and shaping futures.
    At Civil Air Patrol, young people (cadets) interested in community service, developing confidence and competence as leaders, enhancing physical fitness and mental resilience, and exploring a wide range of potential career interests, have opportunities that are not possible in other organizations. We have several innovative programs that introduce youth to career opportunities in aerospace, cyberspace, and outer space.

    CAP squadrons nearby:
    1. Franklin County Composite Squadron operates out of Triangle North Executive Airport (about 15 miles from school) 
    2. Raleigh-Wake Composite Squadron operates out of RDU (about 26 miles from school) 
    Students thinking about joining should contact and visit both squadrons. The underlying program, curriculum, and regulations that we operate under are the same. But each squadron has their own unique strengths and opportunities. However, we do have a system in place that allows cadets from one squadron to attend some of the events hosted by another squadron (such as some emergency services training, field trips, etc.).     Lift Academy Cadet Program (Leadership in Flight Training)

    The Cadet Program offers a unique opportunity to get connected and involved with LIFT Academy and Republic Airways long before entering the flight deck. For high school students passionate and interested in aviation, the Cadet Program is a series of virtual meetings free for Cadets to attend. See website HERE.

    Wake County EMS Course 
    Want to become an EMT? This course is aligned to the EMT Basic certification available from the North Carolina Office of Emergency Medical Services. The course is also aligned to meet the standards of Emergency Technology 1 and 2 from the Department of Public Instruction. This is a year-long course that spans two consecutive semesters. Upon successful completion of this course, students will be eligible to test for their North Carolina EMT credential.

    Work-based learning strategies appropriate for this course include clinical hours. Clinical shifts will be completed during this course. Students will be required to complete 48 hours of clinical hours with a designated EMS agency. This will be scheduled in addition to class days and should not interfere with class.     Soil & Water Conservation Summer Camp
    This is a week-long summer conservation camp at NCSU. Rising 10th-12th graders can apply. Teens will get hands-on experience in various fields of natural resources management, such as soil and water conservation, forestry, water quality and wildlife. The camp provides students with opportunities to speak with professionals from a variety of fields in the natural sciences, go on field trips, engage in hands-on activities and projects, and learn about the college experience and career paths.  There are also opportunities for awards and scholarships at the end of the week!

    Biotech in Action 
    Biogen - MIT Biotech in Action has an in-person summer lab and a virtual summer lab for 9th -12th graders.
    Conduct a hands-on lab project, meet with scientists, and get an inside look at a biotech company! You will learn about the drug development process while also conducting a series of biotech laboratory techniques. Each day will focus on lab work, but there will also be opportunities to hear from and speak with employees from a wide range of departments.

    ACE Mentor Program 
    ​Students, are you interested in a career in Architecture, Construction Management, or Engineering? If so, you may want to consider participating in the ACE Mentor Program offered to WCPSS high school students. Students may sign up each fall. The ACE mentor program is a national program that is open to any high school student who has the curiosity and drive to learn about a career in design and construction — from contracting and engineering to architecture and landscaping. Led by mentors. Driven by you. As a participant, you’ll join a team of other students led by adult mentors who are practicing industry professionals. ACE isn’t about merely describing specific professions, it’s about immersing you in the profession by engaging you in actual building projects. These can range from new schools and mixed-use developments to amphitheaters and temporary housing for movie stars on location. You’ll visit professional offices, job sites and other relevant locations. You’ll discuss the same issues, and perform the same tasks, as if you worked in the industry. For more information, view the website.

    North Carolina Conservation Corps
    The NC Youth Conservation Corps (NCYCC) accepts applications from youths aged 16 to 24 for summer crews.  As a NCYCC Corps Member, you will build and improve hiking trails, parks, recreational facilities and wildlife habitat, make a difference in people's lives, and have the experience of a lifetime.  Crew members earn $9.60 an hour and may be eligible for an AmeriCorps Education Award. Seven-week and three-week "spike" crews are being offered.  Spike crews are small groups of eight participants who live in tents in a camp setting and work outdoors under the close supervision of highly trained leaders.     Disney Dreamers Academy 
    Disney Dreamers Academy is a power-packed, four-day event held annually at Walt Disney World Resort in Orlando, Florida, in which 100 select high school students, ages 13-19, are inspired to dream big and get a jump-start on making those dreams come true! Students chosen to attend travel from every corner of the country to participate in a series of sessions and workshops held within the magical setting of Walt Disney World Resort, virtually turning the theme parks into vibrant classrooms where dreamers can imagine bright futures, make exciting discoveries and learn how to put their goals into action. Dreamers engage in a wide variety of experiences while working side by side with some of today’s top celebrities, community and industry leaders and dedicated Disney Cast members.     GSK Science in the Summer
    Current high school students will perform work as camp assistants and will help teachers lead daily morning and afternoon science sessions for up to 40 students in grades second through eighth at local libraries or community-based centers in Alamance, Chatham, Durham, Franklin, Granville, Harnett, Johnston, Orange, Vance, and Wake counties.     Horticultural Science Summer Institute
    ​High school students are invited to spend a week at NC State University climbing trees, grafting tomatoes, snacking on raspberries, discovering new genes and so much more. The Horticultural Science Summer Institute is a residential, hands-on, pre-college program designed to engage young people in the many career opportunities within horticulture. Any high school student with a career or hobby interest within the field of agriculture and horticulture are encouraged to apply to the summer institute. The cost for the week is $600 and includes on-campus lodging in the dorms, nearly all the meals, field trips, workshop materials, and entertainment. See website for more information.

    Duke's Summer Training in Academic Research (STAR) Program 

    The Summer Training in Academic Research (STAR) Program provides high-quality research experience for high school students, undergraduate students, and medical students during the summer academic break.

    The five-week in-person program will give participants interested in science and medicine real hands-on experience in research methodology and writing. Participants are placed in teams and matched with Duke faculty mentors to work on an original, hypothesis-driven project, originating as a one-page summary and culminating in a complete research paper. A goal of the program is to have every participant qualify for co-authorship on a peer-reviewed manuscript related to their team’s project.

    The STAR Program is held at the Duke Clinical Research Institute in Durham, N.C., which has organized educational and support programs for junior faculty, fellows, residents, and medical students as well as high school and college students. Participants receive a stipend to attend, which makes the program an option even for students who plan to work over the summer break.     Triangle Youth Leadership Conference (TYLC) at NCSU 
    ​We are seeking motivated high school students interested in building their leadership and professional skills to apply for this unique opportunity. Triangle Youth Leadership Services hosts an annual conference to educate and motivate high school students from across North Carolina to create relevant, local change. The Triangle Youth Leadership Conference (TYLC) was founded by NCSU Park Scholars on the belief that change begins with passionate leaders and that leadership development at a young age is critical to lifelong success.     NCSU's Wilson College of Textiles STEP Summer Program  
    The Wilson College of Textiles at NC State holds five one-week sessions of Summer Textile Explorations Program (STEP) each summer. Participants live on-campus, learn about our degree programs, the admissions process, scholarship opportunities and work on a project related to one of our majors. There is a cost of attending this program.
    Each student has the opportunity to rank their level of interest in the subject areas listed below, and will complete a project pertaining to that subject.

    NCSU Design Lab
    We are the Design Lab for K12 Education and Outreach, the pre-college branch of NC State Universities College of Design. We are reaching out to share a summer opportunity for rising 10th, 11th and 12th grade students. The Design Lab hosts a pre-college summer program for high school students called Design Camp. This is a week-long program that immerses participants in the design process through a week-long studio project. This program is ideal for students who are exploring studying architecture, graphic and experience design, product design, or media arts, design and technology.​

    NCSU's VetCAMP - Summer Program 
    Each summer, the Veterinary Professions Advising Center (VetPAC) at NC State University hosts VetCAMP- a week-long camp for high school students to learn about careers in veterinary medicine and the various opportunities within the field. This year, we are excited to announce that we will return to in-person programming on NC State's campus. Each of the 3 weeks of VetCAMP programming includes: 

    • A behind-the-scenes tour of the College of Veterinary Medicine (CVM)
    • Lunch with CVM faculty and DVM students
    • Basics of a small animal clinic
    • An introduction to veterinary surgery
    • Suture and dissection labs
    • Hands-on experiences with horses, pigs, and small ruminants at the NC State Animal Education Units

    NC State Livestock Science Camp
    What is NC State’s Livestock Science Camp? The camp program is designed to have students engaged in the science (nutrition, genetics, physiology, health, engineering etc.) of animal production. Participants have the opportunity to physically engage with animals, their caretakers, and industry leaders. Examples of these include: taking blood samples from sheep to determine their health status related to internal parasites, conducting body measurements of horses to determine body fat composition and overall health, and collecting and evaluating milk samples from dairy cows to estimate the amount of antibodies to ensure baby calves develop a strong immune system. Participants will also have opportunities to conduct laboratory experiments investigating nutrition, biotechnology, genetics, and more. Throughout the week we explore the high-demand STEM careers related to animal science.
