• Which is right for me?

    Your choice of courses during your Junior and Senior years largely depends on your post high school plans. The goal in high school is to learn as much as possible to be prepared for the next stage in your life. While choosing one program over another may not dramatically impact your future, cultivating a strong academic record will.

    The Diploma Programme is designed to be both broad and balanced as well as conceptual and connected. It offers students access to a wide range of college-level courses that span academic subject areas. In addition the Theory of Knowledge (TOK) course in the IBDP engages students in studying the nature of knowledge, completing independent research and undertaking a project that involves community service.

    CP Brand

    The Career-related Programme is designed for students who want to take college-level Diploma Programme courses while retaining the flexibility to also pursue courses closely related to their chosen career path. Currently the IBCP is available for students interested in a career in Health Sciences or Engineering & Design. Additionally the Personal & Professional Skills course in the IBCP offers students the opportunity to develop skills and competencies required for lifelong learning.

    Advanced Placement courses are recommended for students who want to take classes with harder, more detailed curricula than typical high school classes. AP classes are useful for getting a taste of college-level work while developing the academic skills you’ll need for college success. AP Courses help you stand out to colleges. An “AP” on your high school transcript shows colleges you’ve tackled college-level work.

    CCP

    The NC Career & College Promise program has two available pathways:

    • The CCP Career and Technical Education Pathway is designed for students who want to work toward the completion of a credential before graduating from high school.
    • The CCP College Transfer Pathway is designed for students who wish to begin earning college credit towards a University Transfer degree program (Associate in Arts, Associate in Engineering, Associate in Science or Associate in Fine Arts). These are intended to be for eventual transfer to a four-year college or university.
     

    Both Advanced Placement and IB courses are useful for improving your study skills. Since these classes culminate in a cumulative test at the end of each course, you are not able to just go from unit to unit as you may be able to do in other high school classes. Rather, you need to ensure you're retaining information the whole year. In addition both courses will earn credits at UNC Member schools for students earning a minimum qualifying score on the exam.
