Student Services would like to invite 10th grade students to apply for the Hugh O'Brian Youth (HOBY) leadership workshops. The HOBY programs focus on personal and group leadership, service, and innovation. This 3-day leadership program consists of seminars, workshops, and other events designed to inspire and challenge young people to think critically, solve problems, and become engaged citizens. FGHS will nominate one student and select one alternate. The deadline to submit your HOBY Interest Form to be nominated is December 1, 2025. Please see Ms. Hornacek for more information.

The Summer Training in Academic Research (STAR) Program provides a high-quality research experience for high school students, undergraduate students, and medical students during the summer academic break.
The five-week in-person program will give participants interested in science and medicine real hands-on experience in research methodology and writing. Participants are placed in teams and matched with Duke faculty mentors to work on an original, hypothesis-driven project, originating as a one-page summary and culminating in a complete research paper. A goal of the program is to have every participant qualify for co-authorship on a peer-reviewed manuscript related to their team’s project.
The STAR Program is held at the Duke Clinical Research Institute in Durham, N.C., which has organized educational and support programs for junior faculty, fellows, residents, and medical students as well as high school and college students. Participants receive a stipend to attend, which makes the program an option even for students who plan to work over the summer break.
    More information is attached.

The Occupational Course of Study (OCS) program is excited to announce the launch of our OCS Clothing Closet — a new initiative to support students who may be in need of everyday clothing or professional attire for job training and interviews.
We are currently seeking donations of gently used clothing to help stock our closet. Items we are looking for include:
    • Everyday wear (jeans, t-shirts, hoodies, etc.)
    • Business casual or interview-appropriate clothing
    • Shoes (clean and in good condition)
    • Coats and jackets
    • Belts, accessories, and unused socks or undergarments (new only)
If you have any clean, gently used items you’d like to donate, please bring them to Dr. Samson, OCS Room 221 at your convenience. Your support will go a long way in helping our students feel confident and prepared for both school and workplace settings.
Thank you for your generosity and support of our students!
