Born and raised in the beautiful state of Florida, I graduated from the University of South Florida with a degree in Elementary Education. I taught Kindergarten in Tampa before my husband and I started our family. In early 2002, we loaded up our three young children and moved to Raleigh. I now have 4 fantastic children; Hannah, Carson, Parker, and Jack. As if that isn't enough, we also have two dogs, a cat, and a flock of chickens! Preschool aged children are my very favorite to teach. It's great being a York Bulldog!

Greetings Wonderful York Families!
My name is Susan Kohl Smith…but everyone calls me “Ms. Sue”. I taught at York with Arts in Action long ago! My first love was dance! My 1st grade teacher Miss Jenkins had a record player and she played Aretha Franklin/Tina Turner! I had never heard music like that before and was hooked! When my Dad left the military, we moved to South Jersey, close to Philly. Our small town was called Pitman. After Pitman, I moved to Connecticut and opened Miss Sue's Hot Tots Performing Arts Preschool in Madison, Connecticut. We moved to Raleigh in 1999 and have been here ever since. I have 3 grown children, 2 grandsons and #3 coming at the end of August!

Hello York Bulldogs!
I am excited to be joining the Pre-K Special Education team! Although I was born in Taiwan, I grew up in Cherry Hill, New Jersey, which is right outside Philadelphia. After high school, I spent a lot of time in school. My last degree program was a PhD program in public health sciences (concentrating in epidemiology), which introduced me to teaching as a doctoral student. After my dissertation, I worked for a clinical research organization doing molecular assay development until I decided to pursue a more personally fulfilling career in elementary education. Prior to joining York, I worked as a substitute teacher for the Wake County Public School System. I have experience in substitute teaching in traditional elementary classes, as well as Cross Categorical Resources as part of elementary special education. In my free time I like to read, work on Lego projects, craft, and spend time with my family. My husband and I have a kindergartner who will start at York next year for 1st grade and we have three rambunctious cats at home!
