Eliza Hearn, Art

I'm delighted to teach art at York Elementary! A Raleigh native, I actually attended York for three years as a child. I have a degree in Art Education from Meredith College and a degree in Cultural Anthropology from UNC-Chapel Hill. One of my passions is learning about cultures (and art traditions) from around the world. I love to travel and experience how people live around the world. This will be my 6th year teaching art at York Elementary and my 16th year teaching elementary art education in Wake County. In my free time, along with creating art, I enjoy swimming, taking nature walks, photography, studying nutrition/wellness, and you will often find me hanging out in natural food stores!

I appreciate the opportunity to offer students creative experiences that free the imagination, encourage self-discovery, and inspire continual lifelong learning. Helping students make connections within themselves, to the community, and the world around them is one of my greatest joys. I'm looking forward to a memorable school year with all the students and staff!

Jennifer Riggert, Music

I have taught at York Elementary for over 20+ years.  I have a Bachelors of Music degree from Trenton State College and a Masters of Music degree from UNC-Greensboro. I get the opportunity to see all students in the building for music class each week.  I enjoy greeting the children in the morning with my puppets to help start the day off on a positive note. I have a 4th and 5th Grade chorus group that meets on Mondays and Thursdays in the fall to prepare for a winter concert and then on Thursdays in the spring to prepare for the Raleigh Fine Arts Choral Celebration.

Vickie Sanderlin, Creative Design Teacher

I am a native of the ‘Aloha State’, Honolulu, Hawaii. I graduated from high school at McKinley High. I was born in Honolulu, Hawaii and grew up there and on the Outer Banks of North Carolina. My undergraduate degree is a BFA concentration in art education and a minor in painting from East Carolina School of Art & Design. I later earned an MA in the History of Netherlandish Art and the Art Markets at Duke University. My career spanned thirty-one and a half years teaching visual arts from kindergarten to high school before retiring in 2019. After a five-year hiatus from teaching, I had the marvelous opportunity to return to teaching part-time for a new Creative Design class with a STEM emphasis for first and second-graders at York Elementary this past fall! During my leisure time, I garden, paint, and like to visit art museums and friends from around the world.
