Drivers Education

  • Welcome to the 2023-2024 School Year Please review this information for an overview of the driver education program and the registration process. Jordan Driving School (JDS) is the contracted provider for WCPSS. More information is available at www.jordandriving.com Registration for fall 2023 will open September 13, 2023.

    Each high school location has a LEAD TEACHER (LT) who serves as the contact for that school to better serve a school’s population. The LT names and contact information are on the JDS website at “Contact Lead Teachers” and are organized by school name. Please allow up to 48 hours for a reply; email contact is the preferred method when possible.

    During the school year, a class session is offered monthly beginning in October. We also offer 4-5 sessions at school sites during the summer. Other options such as Saturday and winter/spring break classes will be made available on the website later in the semester. Specific points of info: 

    The classes are held in designated classrooms with DMV-licensed instructors who use a blended program of speakers, direct instruction, computer modules, and videos. 

    The classroom session is 30 hours as mandated by NC and runs 10 days for 3 hours each after school dismisses. Driver education follows all WCPSS cancellations due to weather/other events. 

    A DMV representative visits each classroom to do a vision check and to sign official paperwork. 

    There are 35 students per class. The cost is $65 which must be paid once students are informed of their placement and prior to the start of class. Directions for payment will be shared by LT. 

    If your student is eligible for a fee waiver, locate the link on the JDS website, fill out the form, and return it to the LT when you submit your registration form. The fee waiver will be sent to the Child Nutrition Dept. to verify free/reduced lunch status. Then you will be notified by the LT. 

    Students must be 14 ½ years old on the first day of the class session in which they enroll. 

    Students involved in their athletic season, competitions, musicals, or other activities that do not allow for after-school attendance should wait to enroll at a more convenient time. 

    The Behind-the-Wheel (BTW) phase will take place by class session and age within the class, from oldest to youngest. The directions for registering are also on the website under “Classroom Schedules and Online Payments”. 

    Classes will be listed for (a) Public School After School Classes and (b) Private, Charter & Select Other School Classes. Click one for your type of school attendance and then you will see a listing of schools by name. 

    Click on the name of your school, and read all the directions before you do anything else to clearly understand the process. Then, below the LT contact information, you will see how to register.

    The LT is your primary point of contact for any questions you have or any support you need with the driver's education process at your school. The JDS administrative office is responsible for processing the paperwork, monitoring the sites, and providing support to the classroom and BTW instructors.

Contact Information

  • The Driver Education course in its entirety from classroom to in-car instruction takes approximately 4 months to complete fully. Families are encouraged to seek the driver education course as soon as students qualify. Students have to be 14.5 years old at the start date of the course to qualify for instruction.

Basic Information

  • Students must be at least 14 years and six months old to take a Drivers Education course. Students are required to complete 30 hours in the classroom and six hours behind the wheel with an instructor. Drivers education classes are scheduled throughout the school year and during the summer. Behind the wheel driving is conducted after school between 3:00 PM and 9:00 PM, and from 6:00 AM until 9:00 PM on Saturdays, during the summer and any time students are out of school. Students are driven by age, oldest called first, after completing the classroom phase of Drivers Education.

    Students are also required by the NCDMV and dropout prevention services to pass at least 3 of 4 classes at SRMHS to obtain or maintain a learner's permit or driver's license. You may take the Drivers Education course without meeting the 3 of 4 passing requirement; however, you will not satisfy the driver eligibility rules until you pass 3 of 4 classes. Driver eligibility certificates are validated by Student Services.

Classroom Registration

  • The cost to take Drivers Education is $65.00. Registration and payment must be made online. A schedule of classes will be added soon.

Enrollment

  • Students must bring a copy of their birth certificate and a pen or pencil to class with them.

    Classes meet in Room 2202 from 2:45 PM to 5:45 PM daily for an after-school class and from 7:30 AM to 2:00 PM for a fall break class.

    Please make appropriate arrangements for transportation. Students are to be in class for the entire class session they are assigned.

Eligibility

  • Please read and understand all information on this page before going to Student Services or attempting to go to the DMV for your learner permit!

    Driver Eligibility Certificates are valid for 30 days only. Please submit completed driver eligibility certificates to the DMV before the 30-day deadline. If you know you are not going to the DMV within 30 days, or you are not going to be 15 years old within 30 days, please wait until you are ready to get your learner permit before starting this process.

    Students must pass three of four courses at SRMHS to obtain a validation seal on the driver eligibility certificate. If you fail two or more courses, or you drop out of school before your 18th birthday, your driver eligibility certificate will not be validated. You will also lose your driving privileges if you already have them.

    Certificates will be processed only on Tuesday and Thursday morning of each week during normal school days. Take your paperwork before school, and you may pick up your validated certificate during your lunch period or after school at Student Services.

    During the summer, you may drop paperwork off on any day during the week, but driver eligibility certificates will be processed only on Tuesday and Thursday mornings.


    Please follow these steps in obtaining your Driver Eligibility Certificate:

    1. After completing both the classroom and driving phases of driver education, students may bring their driver education certificate to Student Services, Room 107 to pick up a driver eligibility certificate to take home for parents to review and sign.

    2. Parents/acting parents/guardians are required to print and sign their names and date the upper portion of the driver eligibility certificate.

    3. VERY IMPORTANT! Take the following items with you when going to validate your eligibility certificate:

    • (A) your parent signed Driver Eligibility Certificate
    • (B) your driver education certificate
    • (C) a copy of your birth certificate
    • (D) a copy of your most recently completed semester´s report card (December or June report cards only)

Eye Examination Schedule

  • A DMV representative is scheduled to visit Southeast drivers education classes (Room 2204) to check the eyes of the students. If you were in a previous class and had a medical form issued to you or an 804 form to take to your eye doctor, you are encouraged to come back to class on one of these dates to update your paperwork. Please inform Coach Baker when you plan to have your eyes rechecked.

    Students cannot drive until all vision examination paperwork is complete and signed by a DMV representative.
