Chorus

  • The Choral Music Program at Southeast Raleigh Magnet High School is diverse and inclusive of many styles of music. Incoming freshman may sign up for Vocal Music 1. Once students have taken Vocal Music 1, they can audition for the advanced groups: Select Choir or 18 Karat. Select choir is a large ensemble that competes in NCMEA (North Carolina Music Educators Association) Large Ensemble Festival held at Meredith College each spring. Vocal Music 1 also represents SRMHS at Large Ensemble Festival and 18 Karat competes in Small Ensemble Festival. Students who are placed in 18 Karat may receive one semester of honors credit in the spring semester of their senior year. In addition to these festivals, students also have opportunities to audition for NC Honors Choir, NC All-State Choir, All County Choir, Regional Solo/Small Ensemble festivals.

  • The SRMHS choirs are in great demand for their energetic performances throughout the community and state. They have performed for Pieces of Gold, the NC Diversity Conference in Greensboro, Governor Easley's Inauguration, and the Martin Luther King Jr. Banquet sponsored by NCAE. In 2003, Select chorus received straight Superior ratings at District Choir Contest at Meredith College. These ratings enabled Select Chorus to be invited to sing at Carnegie Hall in March 2004. The choir was directed by world-renowned conductor, Paul Salamunovich , who hails from Hollywood, CA. SRMHS was again represented at Carnegie Hall in 2007 for receiving the same distinction.

Student leadership is vital to the success of the choral program at SRMHS. Choir Council is student elected and helps the director in planning and implementing many events including charity events, social events and the annual spaghetti dinner fundraiser. SRMHS also offers students the ability to join Tri-M Music Honor Society. Each spring, the chorus goes on tour performing around the state and country. Past trips have been to New York, Toronto, New Orleans, Orlando, the Bahamas, Charleston, London and Paris. Through individual fundraising, all students enrolled in the chorus program are eligible to participate in trip activities.
