Sophomore Class Information
-
Things to think about in your sophomore year include...
- Come to school every day you can! Attendance is crucial to high school success. You cannot learn if you are not here.
- Complete all classwork, homework, and study often.
- Get help if needed. HSHS offers plenty of options for free tutoring during H.O.T. Always start with your teacher.
- If you haven't already done so, get involved! We have numerous clubs, activities, and sports to help enhance your high school experience.
- Continue to explore post-secondary options.
- Challenge yourself and don't compare your academic strengths or weaknesses to your classmates. Do the best you can with what you have.
- Don't fall behind. It's easy to drop your GPA, and very difficult to raise it.
- Meet with your school counselor to review your course load and make sure you are satisfying high school graduation and college entrance requirements.
- Begin to study for standardized tests.
- Take the PSAT in the fall. The PSAT is excellent practice for taking the SAT. Your sophomore year PSAT scores will not count for National Merit Scholarship consideration.
- Continue to explore colleges and universities you may be interested in. Check out their admission requirements to ensure that you register for the courses needed and maintain a competitive GPA. Remember, the minimum requirements are just that, minimum.
- Begin to visit college websites and tour colleges you may be interested in.
- Talk with family and friends about their educational experiences.
- Register for rigorous courses for your junior year. Rigorous looks different for everyone, talk to your teachers and school counselor to ensure you are on the right track.
- Your school counselors want to help you reach your fullest potential so you have plenty of options after high school. We will support you, advocate for you, and talk to you anytime. Engage in the process!
PSAT Preparation
-
HSHS will host the PSAT and administer the PSAT to all 10th-grade students who choose to take the test for a cost.
Before test day, use official PSAT/NMSQT practice tests. These practice tests are available for free, both online and on paper.

PreACT Preparation
-
The State of North Carolina gives every 10th grade student an opportunity to take the PreACT.
PreACT® assessments offer 8th, 9th, and 10th graders an early experience with ACT test items, provide a predicted ACT test score, and offers a wealth of information to help students get the start they need to be college-ready.
Anchored on the ACT college and career readiness standards, PreACT assessments help educators, students, and parents, identify areas of academic strength and opportunity. Students may opt to have their information shared with colleges and scholarship agencies when they take PreACT 8/9, PreACT, or PreACT Secure, providing greater opportunities for recruitment and scholarship awards.
