Letters of Recommendations for College Applications

Senior Brag Sheet for Letters of Recommendation
A brag sheet is very similar to a student resume; it highlights your accomplishments, key experiences, leadership skills and employment throughout your high school career. Counselors and teachers can use your brag sheet to write the best letter of recommendation for your college applications.
To get a strong letter of recommendation, choose your recommenders wisely, ask well in advance in person or via email, and then provide all necessary information, such as your resume, the job/program description, deadlines, and specific talking points to help them write a compelling letter. Always thank your recommenders afterward and offer a gentle reminder if a deadline approaches.
1. Choose the Right Recommenders
- Know their field: Select people who know your work well and can speak to your qualifications for the specific opportunity, such as a professor for an academic position or a supervisor for a job.
- Confirm they can write a strong letter: Ask if they feel they know you well enough to write a strong letter of recommendation for your specific application.
2. Ask at the Right Time
- Ask early: Give your recommender ample time to write a quality letter. A minimum of two to six weeks is a good starting point, with more time being even better.
- Ask in person: If possible, ask your recommender in person to make the request personal and show respect for their time. If not, a polite email is acceptable.
- Prepare your approach: Practice what you'll say, and be ready to explain why you're asking them in particular.
3. Provide Essential Information
- A "brag sheet" or packet: Create a document that includes your resume, transcripts, a draft of your application essay, details about the position or program you're applying for, and why you are applying.
- Highlight key moments: Include specific examples of accomplishments, work experiences, or positive personality traits that you'd like them to mention to make the letter more impactful.
- Clarify deadlines: Clearly state the deadline and how the recommendation should be submitted.
4. Follow Up and Show Gratitude
- Send a formal follow-up: After your initial request, send an email thanking them again and including the supporting documents.
- Send a reminder: A single, polite reminder is appropriate if the deadline is approaching.
- Express your thanks: Send a thank-you note to express your appreciation for their time and effort.
