Senior Exam Exemptions
Exam exemptions are an incentive to promote positive academic success and positive attendance behaviors. Where students do not meet the criteria for exemption, they will be expected to participate in the exam. Please keep in mind that taking the exam is not a punishment but rather a standard expectation that has been in place for high school courses throughout grades 9-12.
Exam Exemption Criteria
Senior exam exemption details are set by the school district. For the 2024-2025 school year, criteria for senior exam exemptions are as follows:
Students in grade 12 may be exempt from exams based on the following criteria: (1) projected final grade of B or higher; and (2) student must have 10 or fewer absences in the course. Please note the following:
-
All absences will count toward the 10 total absences including excused, unexcused, educational, college visits, etc.
-
At the end of the semester, students may apply to waive additional absences that are (1) outside of their control (such as documented medical absence/hospitalization; absence due to bus route not running, etc.); and (2) are well documented beyond the student / parent. This waiver will be extremely limited.
-
Students cannot be exempt from state testing including field tests.
Waiver Requests
Approval of waiver requests will be exceptionally rare. Waivers will only be considered where there are circumstances that are well documented and well outside of the student's ability to control. An example of a potential waiver would be hospitalization that is documented as preventing student attendance at school. In no situation will more than five (5) absences be approved above the limit even when it is outside of the control of the student.
Absences related to illness, college visitations, educational absences, and family vacations are specific examples of absences that will not be waived.
