    As a Summer Challenge student, you can choose any two seminars from the list of 20. Each seminar is designed to expand your academic horizons, through lectures, discussions, individual and group work, and project-based assignments - even field trips.

    Durham Bulls/WRAL Post 50
    The Durham Bulls Explorer Post 50 is a co-ed unpaid internship program that offers students, ages 14-20, a unique and invaluable opportunity to gain exceptional experience in the field of television broadcasting. Durham Bulls Explorer Post 50 is supported and sponsored by the Durham Bulls, Fox 50 and Capitol Broadcasting Company. Now in our 25th season of broadcasting, Post 50 provides the live broadcast of the Durham Bulls games on MeTV, WRAL Sports Plus, MiLB.com as well as within the ballpark.     Biotech in Action 
    Biogen - MIT Biotech in Action has an in-person summer lab and a virtual summer lab for 9th -12th graders.
    Conduct a hands-on lab project, meet with scientists, and get an inside look at a biotech company! You will learn about the drug development process while also conducting a series of biotech laboratory techniques. Each day will focus on lab work, but there will also be opportunities to hear from and speak with employees from a wide range of departments.

    ACE Mentor Program 
    ​    Students, are you interested in a career in Architecture, Construction Management, or Engineering? If so, you may want to consider participating the the ACE Mentor Program offered to WCPSS high school students. Students may sign up each fall.
    The ACE mentor program is a national program that is open to any high school student who has the curiosity and drive to learn about a career in design and construction — from contracting and engineering to architecture and landscaping. Led by mentors. Driven by you. As a participant, you’ll join a team of other students led by adult mentors who are practicing industry professionals. ACE isn’t about merely describing specific professions, it’s about immersing you in the profession by engaging you in actual building projects. These can range from new schools and mixed-use developments to amphitheaters and temporary housing for movie stars on location. You’ll visit professional offices, job sites and other relevant locations. You’ll discuss the same issues, and perform the same tasks, as if you worked in the industry.     North Carolina Conservation Corps
    The NC Youth Conservation Corps (NCYCC)  accepts applications from youth ages 16 to 24 for summer crews.  As a NCYCC Corps Member, you will build and improve hiking trails, parks, recreational facilities and wildlife habitat, make a difference in people's lives, and have the experience of a lifetime.  Crew members earn $9.60 an hour and may be eligible for an AmeriCorps Education Award. Seven week and three week "spike" crews are being offered.  Spike crews are small groups of eight participants who live in tents in a camp setting and work outdoors under the close supervision of highly trained leaders.

    WRAL Explorer Post 5
    WRAL Explorer Post 5 offers members the opportunity to learn all aspects of television broadcasting, from reporting and anchoring to producing newscasts and shooting local productions. Members will hear and learn from award-winning professionals at WRAL through clinics and workshops as well as get hands-on experience by participating in our “job shadowing” program. Post 5 members will leave the program with real-world skills, and we hope they will continue to pursue the field of broadcasting in college and provide WRAL with a powerful recruiting program for future employees.

    GSK Science in the Summer
    Current high school students will perform work as camp assistants and will help teachers lead daily morning and afternoon science sessions for up to 40 students in grades second through eighth at local libraries or community-based centers in Alamance, Chatham, Durham, Franklin, Granville, Harnett, Johnston, Orange, Vance, and Wake counties.     Horticultural Science Summer Institute
    ​High school students are invited to spend a week at NC State University climbing trees, grafting tomatoes, snacking on raspberries, discovering new genes and so much more. The Horticultural Science Summer Institute is a residential, hands-on, pre-college program designed to engage young people in the many career opportunities within horticulture. Any high school student with a career or hobby interest within the field of agriculture and horticulture are encouraged to apply to the summer institute. The cost for the week is $600 and includes on-campus lodging in the dorms, nearly all the meals, field trips, workshop materials, and entertainment.

    Duke's Summer Training in Academic Research (STAR) Program 
    The eight-week program, held, will give participants who are interested in science and medicine real hands-on experience in research methodology and writing. Participants are placed in teams and matched with Duke faculty mentors to work on an original, hypothesis-driven project, originating as a one-page summary and culminating in a complete research paper. A goal of the program is to have every participant qualify for co-authorship on a peer-reviewed manuscript related to their team’s project.
    The STAR Program is held at the Duke Clinical Research Institute in Durham, N.C., which has organized educational and support programs for junior faculty, fellows, residents, and medical students as well as high school and college students. Participants receive a stipend to attend, which makes the program an option even for students who plan to work over the summer break. The location is at 200 Morris St. in Durham, NC.     Young Innovators Program - Summer Program
    An opportunity for students interested in STEM and pharmacy careers to participate in a summer internship program at UNC Eshelman. YIP is a direct programmatic offering of the Eshelman Institute for Innovation for high school students interested in career paths in STEM and, specifically, the pharmaceutical sciences and pharmacy practice.     NCSU Design Lab
    We are the Design Lab for K12 Education and Outreach, the pre-college branch of NC State Universities College of Design. We are reaching out to share a summer opportunity for rising 10th, 11th and 12th grade students. The Design Lab hosts a pre-college summer program for high school students called Design Camp. This is a week-long program that immerses participants in the design process through a week-long studio project. This program is ideal for students who are exploring studying architecture, graphic and experience design, product design, or media arts, design and technology.​ 

    North Carolina Criminal Justice Fellows Program 
    100 new fellowships each year to selected students and offers a 100% forgivable educational loan for them to attend a North Carolina Community College, obtain their associate degree, and pursue a career in criminal justice. High school seniors/graduates are eligible to apply for a fellowship. Once awarded, recipients of the forgivable loan are required to graduate with their associate degree in two (2) years and, upon graduation, become certified and employed full-time in an eligible criminal justice profession in an eligible North Carolina County for a period of four (4) years.     NCSU's VetCAMP - Summer Program 
    Each summer, the Veterinary Professions Advising Center (VetPAC) at NC State University hosts VetCAMP- a week-long camp for high school students to learn about careers in veterinary medicine and the various opportunities within the field. This year, we are excited to announce that we will return to in-person programming on NC State's campus. Each of the 3 weeks of VetCAMP programming includes: 

    • A behind-the-scenes tour of the College of Veterinary Medicine (CVM)
    • Lunch with CVM faculty and DVM students
    • Basics of a small animal clinic
    • An introduction to veterinary surgery
    • Suture and dissection labs
    • Hands-on experiences with horses, pigs, and small ruminants at the NC State Animal Education Units

    NC State Livestock Science Camp
    What is NC State’s Livestock Science Camp? The camp program is designed to have students engaged in the science (nutrition, genetics, physiology, health, engineering etc.) of animal production. Participants have the opportunity to physically engage with animals, their caretakers, and industry leaders. Examples of these include: taking blood samples from sheep to determine their health status related to internal parasites, conducting body measurements of horses to determine body fat composition and overall health, and collecting and evaluating milk samples from dairy cows to estimate the amount of antibodies to ensure baby calves develop a strong immune system. Participants will also have opportunities to conduct laboratory experiments investigating nutrition, biotechnology, genetics, and more. Throughout the week we explore the high-demand STEM careers related to animal science.

    Young Nonprofit Fellowship Program
    General Services Foundation, a Triangle-based nonprofit, teaching students how to find their place in the service community through coaching, seed funding for initiatives, providing resources/networks, and a team, amongst other things. We hope to foster a life-long passion in service for high schoolers to have a community-oriented mindset, educate themselves on nonprofit topics, and access career/professional development in and out of the nonprofit sector.
    All current 9th-11th graders are eligible.
     Below are the different components of the fellowship program:

    • Internship: Be matched/paired with a host nonprofit you will intern with. You will be working with them on a day-to-day basis.
    • Impact Initiative: You will host many small projects, and a larger Impact Initiative, to benefit your host nonprofit. This can range from events, campaigns, and fundraisers that GSF will help you organize.
    • Article: Each fellow will complete an article to showcase their successes and where they’ve grown.
    • Weekly Assignments & Book: To support personal and professional development, we have a curriculum with weekly assignments to help market yourself to employers/colleges, learn more about the nonprofit sector, and create healthy habits.
    • Participation: Key piece to all five previous categories. Following our leadership principles and having a high level of involvement is expected of fellows.
