ACT for Juniors:  I have had a couple of great questions about the ACT from parents since I included information last week in the email.  The ACT is given across NC to all Juniors.  It serves to help students with applications and it gives us information about student progress.  Parents do not have to pay for this administration conducted by the school staff.   We will administer it on Feb. 27th.  This score COUNTS and can be used for college applications.  Certainly, students can and probably should take it more times.  I want you to be really cognizant that students really need to plan to take it no later than August going into the Senior year if you want scores back for early admissions applications.  It is important to look into the options for taking SAT and ACT to make plans for spring and early summer test dates.  It is a little overwhelming to see how quickly this will slip up on you.  In addition, it would be wise to look at the college requirements now to see if colleges have assessment preferences and other requirements that you should consider now.

ACT on Feb. 27th: (Originally posted January 27)  After the review of the practice scores this week, I realized that parents really need to understand some critical information.  First, all juniors take the ACT for free.  This is a GREAT chance to nail the exam in preparation for college applications.  The exam needs to be taken very seriously.  If they do really well, it will not be necessary to pay to take the exam again.  Secondly, students need to retake by early summer in order to have score to be ready to apply for early admissions and scholarships.  Lastly, we only offer the ACT for all students without a fee.  If your child tends to be a stronger math student than English, the SAT might be a better assessment to show those skills.  We learned to much from the Collegewise presentation that I wish you all could have heard.  More than anything, I hope sophomore and junior parents are doing research now.  Starting these processes during the senior year is really quite late and could prevent students for accessing opportunities. I care fiercely for students to have great chances, so I am sharing or order to have you get the wheels in motion!

8th Annual Shelton Leadership Challenge:  North Carolina Wesleyan College is hosting The 8th Annual Shelton Leadership Challenge July 8-July 13, 2018, for all grade level students with a 3.0 GPA or higher (including graduating seniors).  The cost to attend the program is $500 for the week and includes meals, room, transportation during the camp, and any activities that will take place during camp.  To register or find out the advantages of this leadership week, go to http://ncwc.edu/shelton-leadership/ . The application deadline is May 18, 2018. A scholarship will be offered to students who complete the program and attend NC Wesleyan; the scholarship is renewable each of the four years if the student maintains an overall GPA of at least a 2.70

Video Game Tournament at RHS:  We all know how students love to play video games, so Mr. Manusos and his merry band of TSA students along with FFA will host a tournamnet.  It will be held February 13th and 14th after school in the auditorium. It runs from 2:30 to 4:45 on both days so we can have preliminary rounds and finalist rounds. The cost is $15 per player and $5 to watch both days. Space is limited for competitors so sign up soon. Registration opened Friday night at 5:00 pm at the link below or students can use the qr code found on the flyers on the cafeteria.

Planning ahead for current juniors:  In the past few summers, seniors have taken portraits at a studio in Raleigh.  We have been in conversation this past week and are very likely going to host tux/drape, cap and gown, informals at RHS during the week of July 30-Aug. 3 as opposed to a studio off site.  I wanted to give you a heads up that we are trying to make the trip shorter and the effort easier to accomplish over the summer.  There will be more information to come later, but I thought it would be important to let you know given it is a shift in the way we have done business in the past.

Senior Fees:  June grads need to go to  Online School Payments on our website  to pay $40.

Registration for AP Exams:  The site for registration went live on December 11th.  Mr Douglas, our Dean of Students, has prepared information for the AP teachers to share with the students. If you wish to see the presentation, you will be able to access it on the RHS website.  Go to Academics -> Advanced Placement -> RHS AP Exam Information -> AP Exam Informational Powerpoint

Planning for Graduation: I know I mentioned earlier in the year that I would like to collect white dress shirts, black pants and belts, black ties and black dress shoes and socks for our young men who may need them.  Likewise, we can accept flat black dress shoes (no sandals or super high heels) for our young ladies.  If you have a connection like a civic group or church group who would like to assist in collection of clothing, it would be much appreciated.
