    Monday:  Thanks to the snow events in January, we will be in school on Monday.  It was supposed to be a workday.  Can’t wait to see the precious ones on Monday morning!!!  Wink. Wink.

    Honor Roll Celebration on Friday:  I just want to say thank you to all who helped and donated.  It was AWESOME!

    Response to Parkland, FL Incident:  We all are deeply saddened and impacted by the school shooting this week.  In WCPSS, safety and well-being of our students is a responsibility we take very seriously. WCPSS schools have proactive plans and procedures to protect our students. We frequently conduct practice drills and constantly improve measures for responding to emergency situations. We work closely with area law enforcement to continuously review, evaluate and strengthen security at our schools.  WCPSS has shared some tips for helping your children cope with news of such events:

    • Take care of yourself as a parent – make sure you have a trusted friend or family member with whom you can talk in order to process your own feelings.
    • Maintain consistent structures and support for your child – children feel the safest when their routines remain intact.
    • Let your kids take the lead in the discussion. Invite them to ask their questions so that you are only addressing their concerns and sharing that which is necessary to help them feel safe.
    • Encourage your child to express their feelings, not suppress them. It is important that your child feel safe in sharing their thoughts and feelings with you, even though doing so might be uncomfortable.
    • Validate your child’s feelings while helping them to develop healthy ways to deal with emotions such as anger, fear or sadness.
    • Assure your child that they are safe, but don’t over promise concerning what may happen in the future. Instead, affirm that they are loved and cared for, and that there are people working to keep them safe.
    • Limit your child’s exposure to the news – after a tragedy, media sites are filled with images and stories that can be difficult for children to process. Also, pay close attention to the social media sites your child may be visiting, as these sites can quickly fill with stories related to a tragedy.

    Ultimately, if you are concerned about your child’s response to this or any tragic event, reach out to the school counselor for additional resources and support. The best means to keep schools safe is to maintain healthy and open relationships between adults and children at all times. Help us remind students that they have an obligation to bring information about situations that cause them concern to adults at the school so that we can respond quickly and appropriately to protect their safety. Students and parents can also report concerns about student or school safety to our anonymous tip line, (919) 856-1911.

    CCP and Wake Tech:  Students who are interested in earning college credits at Wake Tech while still enrolled in high school may learn about the CCP program at ccp.waketech.edu.   Information sessions will be held on both Wake Tech's north and south campuses beginning late February through May 15.  Students will need to register on the website to attend the mandatory information session.

     

    REMINDERS

    Course Registration for 2018-19:  Counselors will begin to meet with students on Tuesday, February 20th.

    ACT Prep and Administration:  On Friday, February 16th, we shared links and basic tips to help students prepare for the ACT administration on February 27th.  There are lots of online resources that students can access to help them learn tips and tricks to prepare to test well.  It is worth taking time at home to do a little research and talk about the tips together.

    PTSA Nominations:  Our wonderful PTSA Board is already thinking about next year.  They very much want to know if there are folks who are interested in a position on the Board who are not presently represented.  Please contact the school or a present Board member to let us know you are interested.

    Planning ahead for current juniors:  In the past few summers, seniors have taken portraits at a studio in Raleigh.  We have been in conversation this past week and are very likely going to host tux/drape, cap and gown, informals at RHS during the week of July 30-Aug. 3 as opposed to a studio off site.  I wanted to give you a heads up that we are trying to make the trip shorter and the effort easier to accomplish over the summer.  There will be more information to come later, but I thought it would be important to let you know given it is a shift in the way we have done business in the past.

    Senior Fees:  June grads need to go to  Online School Payments on our website  to pay $40.  They are due by March 28th.

    Registration for AP Exams:  The site for registration went live on December 11th.  Mr Douglas, our Dean of Students, has prepared information for the AP teachers to share with the students.If you wish to see the presentation, you will be able to access it on the RHS website.  Go to Academics -> Advanced Placement -> RHS AP Exam Information -> AP Exam Informational Powerpoint.
